Our vision

To provide resources and spaces where Daoist texts, queer and gender diverse voices, curiosity and imagination meet to expand what is possible in fostering compassion and access to our essential natures – without taking intersectional identity for granted.

Our mission

The mission of the Lan Cai He Guan is to gather and maintain texts that illuminate Daoist traditions, queer experience, the intersection of these experiences, and the many literatures that inspire reflection on reality and its possibilities.  Reflecting its communities, the Lan Cai He Guan emphasizes English language materials and translations.  The Lan Cai He Guan makes these texts available to each of its constituent communities, largely on a reference library basis.

The Lan Cai He Guan serves and is guided by the interconnected communities that sustain it:

  • The Parting Clouds Daoist Education Community.

  • The Five Immortals Temple Community.

  • Non-native Chinese speaking Daoists all over the world.

  • Those seeking a better world.

  • The queer and gender diverse religious, curious, and spiritual community.

  • And especially those at the intersection of these communities.

The Lan Cai He Guan’s resources include Daoist academic and religious texts, works on healing and philosophy, queer writings, science fiction (and similar texts that cause us to reflect on reality and its possibilities), and books that explore cultural intersections between China and the world. These materials are offered freely as a reference collection, with the Librarian providing custodianship, research assistance, and access to visiting scholars and community members.

The Lan Cai He Guan intends to also offer physical spaces where community can gather for tea and discussion and a residence for a visiting scholar to visit the library.

Through these commitments, the Lan Cai He Guan sustains a place where study, community, and imagination come together in service of cultivating the way and uplifting queer and gender diverse religious and spiritual voices.

Background

About the Lan Cai He Guan:

The Lan Cai He Guan is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit that serves as a reference library and a resource serving the English-speaking Daoists and the queer community. The Lan Cai He Guan includes a large variety of physical books that are, at present, located in the farmhouse in the valley below the Purple Constellations Temple (紫薇宫) which is currently under construction in Martinez, California.  Purple Constellations and the Lan Cai He Guan are separate organizations, even if they share one Daoist priest, Rafael Langer-Osuna (宗妙), as a common builder.
